Asia Uncut Season 2: In Shanghai!
If you missed checking out The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien the last time you were in LA, now’s your chance to be part of a talk show studio audience with Asia Uncut, which is coming to Shanghai to tape its second season. This English-language talk show is pretty much the first of its kind for Asia; among the highlights of the show’s debut season, filmed on location in Singapore, were Ethan Hawke, Jennifer Garner, Maggie Q and James Blunt. The second season will bring back host Jon Niermann, along with a nicely localized, fresh makeover. Popular hometown trumpeter Theo Croker will be on hand to lead the house band.
Wednesday Night Swing
The quartet "Theo Croker 4 Swing" has been bringing A Swinging Affair At Cotton’s for the past three Wednesdays. It is quite a special little get-up they have going on here, with the musicians on the floor right beside the patrons, sitting on the same plush red chairs that is so Cotton’s, and playing as if they were in their own living rooms. The other remarkable characteristic of A Swinging Affair At Cotton’s is that trumpeter and band leader Theo Croker has managed to gather together four of the town’s most talented performers for this event.
Jenn at House of Blues & Jazz: Monday Night Jazz
I’m at the House of Blues & Jazz on a Monday night, not for a random drop-by as I rarely grace the construction-choked streets of the Bund unless there’s a special reason or another. Tonight’s special reason is original music. Tunes written by the players on stage are a special treat when you’ve been around town listening to covers of standards for a couple of months now. No better place than the o.g. House, where the sound will most likely be supreme with its vaulted ceilings and general stage/speaker placement. The main room of the House is fairly full tonight. We’ve got an intellectual in the corner, scarf and all, trying to read a thick tome in the low lamplight, and a fair collection of businessmen looking to take the edge off before returning to hotel rooms in the area or houses in Gubei.
